Comets have fascinated people for thousands of years. When they enter the inner solar system and approach the sun, they suddenly begin to eject material and form their characteristic tails of gas and dust - much like vitamin tablets thrown into a glass of water. And although a space probe accompanied a comet for two years for the first time in 2014 and provided an unprecedented wealth of information, we still do not understand exactly how comets manage to eject vast amounts of dust. Understanding this "activity paradox" is one of the main challenges of current comet research. In his doctoral thesis, Mr. Pfeifer therefore tracked hundreds of coma "dust particles" in order to get a little closer to solving this problem.
