Flight into the invisible universe with the stratospheric observatory SOFIA
Away from the stars, many things happen in space in secret. Only highly specialized instruments can see anything in the darkness of the thermal radiation of interstellar dust: How stars are formed, how planets form, how black holes grow, how small and large molecules come together, how magnetic fields swirl around and how distant galaxies glow primarily in infrared. Some of these infrared colors pass through the atmosphere. For others, you have to fly high. In addition, large telescopes on the ground can only see clearly in the infrared. The flying stratospheric observatory SOFIA has captured this space radiation and delivered many remarkable new findings. Some of these results will be presented and some special properties of thermal radiation will also be introduced.
