The solar corona - a hot topic
The corona is a halo of hot plasma that forms the sun's outer atmosphere. The temperature of the corona is several hundred times higher than the surface of the sun. How this is possible is one of the most hotly debated questions in astrophysics.
Like in a cooking pot, plasma rises from the interior of the sun, cools down and sinks back down again. In the process, the plasma streams intertwine and twist the solar magnetic field, which also penetrates the solar atmosphere and thus supplies energy to the corona. However, this process is not fully understood. In my talk, I will
discuss how we study coronal heating using astronomical observations and supercomputers.
