A telescope from NRW on the summit of the Andes

The Fred Young Submilimeter Telescope (formerly CCAT) was unveiled in Wesel in August 2024 and then dismantled and transported to the Andes. A consortium of scientists from the USA, Canada, Chile and Germany is responsible for the construction and operation of the telescope. The lecturer will tell us about the telescope and its instruments, which do not detect visible light but radiation with wavelengths between infrared and microwaves. But he will also report on important planned applications, e.g. the cycle of star formation in our galaxy or insights into the epoch of the so-called reionization of the universe.

Speaker: Dr. Ronan Higgins, Faultät für Astrophysik, Universität zu Köln
